Studio Engineering Guides & Calibration Blueprints
Step-by-step technical blueprints for monitor calibration, absorption coefficient tables, and broadcast stem delivery architectures.
Studio Monitor Calibration Protocol (83 dB SPL C-Weighted)
Accurate acoustic decision-making requires an aligned monitoring chain calibrated to a known reference listening level. This procedure outlines the standard calibration protocol established under SMPTE RP 200 and EBU Tech 3276.
Calibration Sequence
- Isolate Left Channel: Route -20 dBFS band-limited pink noise to the Left speaker only. Adjust analog monitor gain until the SLM reads exactly 83 dB SPL (C/Slow).
- Isolate Right Channel: Mute Left, route identical pink noise to Right speaker. Adjust gain to reach exactly 83 dB SPL (C/Slow).
- Subwoofer Bass Management: Route test signal to subwoofer channel with 80 Hz Linkwitz-Riley low-pass filter active. Adjust sub level until combined response aligns with the target RTA curve (+4 to +6 dB low-end shelf for cinematic mixing).
- Phase Coherence Check: Play correlated pink noise on both Left and Right simultaneously. The SLM should read 86 dB SPL (+3 dB increase for coherent stereo summation).
Broadcast Delivery Stems Architecture: Stereo & 5.1 Surround
When delivering finished audio packages for European and international broadcasters, sound assets must be organized into strictly separated stems to allow localization, dubbing, and re-versioning.
| Stem Name | Content Elements | Channel Format | Loudness Target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Mix (PRINT_MASTER) | Complete composite program (DX + FX + MX + Foley) | Stereo (2.0) & 5.1 | -23.0 LUFS (±0.5 LU) |
| Dialogue (DX_STEM) | Sync dialogue, ADR, voiceover, narrator narration | Stereo / Mono | -24.0 LUFS isolated |
| Music & Effects (M&E_STEM) | Full mix without any dialogue elements (for foreign dubbing) | Stereo & 5.1 | Summed to conform |
| Sound Effects & Foley (FX_STEM) | Hard FX, Foley footsteps, cloth movements, atmospheres | Stereo & 5.1 | Dynamic headroom preserved |
| Music (MX_STEM) | Score, source music, licensed cues, musical transitions | Stereo & 5.1 | Peak at -1.0 dBTP |
